Katie Keller, Type 1 Diabetic

Surprising Diagnosis

It all came as a surprise. With Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) being a quick onset disease, there was very little notice that this would be happening. About a week before I was in the hospital, I started noticing signs like severe dehydration, unhealthy weight loss, fatigue, and dizziness. I ended up in the hospital in Diabetic Ketoacidosis and left three days later with a lifechanging diagnosis. I couldn’t continue on the way I had before, and I didn’t really have a choice.

Experimenting with Lifestyle

After finding out I had T1D, I had to figure out what worked for me. Choosing between things like daily injections or an insulin pump, finger pricks or a continuous glucose monitor, weren’t the only choices I had to make. I saw MANY doctors (all with different opinions) and had to choose between what I thought was a “normal” lifestyle, and one with a diabetic low carbohydrate diet.

Education

To my surprise, I didn’t have to choose between either of them! Yes, I have to make conscious choices daily about what I eat or drink because of my diagnosis, but I didn’t have to give up everything I love. Through my education at Brigham Young University, I received a Bachelors in Science studying Exercise Science with an emphasis on Athletic Training. I dove deep into the physiology of the body and learned what my body needed to function at it’s highest level. I wanted to help others do the same, so I received my Nutrition Coaching Certification from the Nutrition Coaching Institute.

PRESENT

Starting DAWN

My family became my inspiration. After having a healthy pregnancy with my daughter, I knew that I didn’t have to be limited by what others had to say about my conditions. I knew that I wanted to help others take control of their life, manage their autoimmune diseases, and balance their hormones so that they didn’t have to be limited either. DAWN is all about a new start. Like the Chinese Proverb states, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” You don’t have to be limited. Life should be limitless. Let us help you find what works for you so that you can enjoy all that it has to offer.
